Porthleven

In 1978, after seeing a Peter Lanyon exhibition at the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester, experiencing the power of painting for the first time, I decided to switch from Architecture to painting, studying at Canterbury College of Art 1980-83. The ‘Porthleven’ series began in 2008, as a homage to Peter Lanyon’s iconic 1952 ‘Porthleven’ painting, but since then has become a personal motif and very special place to me, continuing to inspire invention and surprise in my work. Three of the recent paintings have been showcased as ‘Painting of the Day’ with Contemporary British Painting.

I am very much looking forward to celebrating reaching 100 paintings in the series with a solo exhibition ‘Porthleven’ at Kellie Millar Arts, Brighton, 19 Sept – 2 Nov 2026
